About our Newcastle funeral home

John Bardgett & Sons Funeral Directors were established in 1914. We are proud to have served many of the local families in Newcastle upon Tyne for over a century.

Our funeral home at Oakwood House is easy to reach from the surrounding areas, including from Fenham, Arthur's Hill and Elswick.
We are well equipped to provide the highest standards of funeral care, with four private chapels of rest, and a service chapel which can seat up to 30 people.

We are here to help make things a little bit easier during this difficult time. As professional funeral directors, we are here to advise, guide and support you, helping to put arrangements in place on your behalf.

  • When someone dies, the first steps will depend on how and where the person passed away. Our step-by-step guides will walk you through the practical steps. For additional support and personal advice, please get in touch with us.


  • You don't have to make an appointment at our funeral homes. However, doing so will ensure that someone can be available to cater to your needs. When arranging a funeral, our Funeral Directors are happy to visit you in your own home, if required.


  • Third party funeral costs are additional charges which we will manage for you and attach to your single invoice. Get in touch with us to confirm costs and plan a funeral to fit your budget.


  • If you choose to arrange the funeral with us, you will be given the option of a complimentary Funeral Notice. We will set it up for you using the details discussed during the arrangements. All we need is an email address.


  • Dignity Funeral Plans let you pay for your funeral in advance and at today's price. It's a way of taking control of the unexpected, setting out the arrangements and limiting the costs by paying for the services included in the funeral plan upfront.

Lorraine and the team at Bardgett & Sons recently handled the funeral of our mum at West Road crematorium in Newcastle.
Lorraine was great to deal with right from the start. She came to visit us at our mum's house to talk through the arrangements, and she followed up with reassuring communications afterwards. She also put us in touch with a humanist celebrant who was also marvellous.
Everything went really smoothly on the day of the funeral, and all the members of the Bardgett team, including Lorraine, were professional and respectful and did an amazing job.
Although it was a sad day, it was also one when we could remember and celebrate our mum's long and happy life, and we are very grateful to Lorraine for helping to make it all happen in the best way possible. Thank you 🙏

From initial call until after the funeral all the staff were excellent. John Bardgett took care of everything, arranging flowers, liaising with the church / crematorium whilst keeping us informed all the time. Nothing was too much trouble, would highly recommend.

Although the funeral plan had been in place for a number of years and my relatives requests were already known, from the first phone call, all staff were professional, efficient compassionate and caring. I wasn’t sure what to expect. However,
Lorraine was outstanding, going above and beyond in her attention to detail and respect for our deceased relative. Also guiding and supporting us throughout the whole journey. For this we are very thankful. We feel like we were wrapped in a big hug!

Took all the stress and worries away, all staff were lovely, very professional and ensured Mam had a beautiful service, we used Bardgetts again following Father in Laws funeral a few month earlier. At such a difficult time with so much to arrange, all the emotional distress and the terrible sense of loss, I was dreading the undertaker side. However the lady was exceptional. Funeral Director was attentive and intuitive. My family felt supported throughout a difficult time. Follow up calls checking we understood each stage of funeral process was reassuring. Bardgetts adjusted order of service on request and Dad looked amazing when we visited Chapel of Rest. We were offered flowers from the floral tributes to press as keepsakes, this wasn’t something we would have thought of at the time and we will treasure the flowers. A most sincere thank you to Lorraine – six years ago with great care and thoughtfulness you guided our Mam and family through funeral arrangements for our Dad, and then in April this year your reassuring ways brought comfort to us when Mam’s time came and you guided us once more as we lay Mam to rest with him. The service provided by yourselves was excellent and very careing throughout the whole process. Lorraine my main contact was outstanding. It felt I had a protective arm around me the whole time. I appreciate there are other people behind the scene doing sterling work but my interaction was via Lorraine.
