From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.

A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.

Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.

The service we received seemed great (at first)

We viewed our father in the chapel of rest and I had to stop my younger sister from going in because there was visible glue coming from my fathers eyes which quite frankly looked terrifying and he was covered in hair from when they had cut his hair and beard and not bothered to clean him afterwards. We had nothing but apologies and this was sorted out so I left this issue.

Whilst planning my fathers funeral which took place in June 2020- the height of Covid- we planned for my fathers service to be recorded, and we were told by the funeral director it wouldn’t be an extra charge, that it was complimentary due to the service we had received in the chapel of rest and due to only 10 people being able to attend the funeral. My father’s funeral comes and goes, noting my younger sister couldn’t attend. We collect dads ashes and ask when we can have the recording, we’re told it shouldn’t be too long. It was long, 5 years later we still haven’t received it. I have been contacting dignity funerals for 5 years and been ignored by their head office and complaints departments. I even went to the Caerphilly branch which was shut for a stupid amount of time, I messaged their Facebook page and everything.

Keeping in mind this funeral cost over £3000 and I paid for it out of my own pocket, I was 20 at the time and I am still in debt with it now. Finally after 5 years, and submitting my probably 100th email to dignity, I received a reply and an investigation was commenced and found dignity responsible for the mess that had occurred and guess what? My dads funeral recording is completely lost and we will never ever see it again as the systems had changed twice so it’s gone forever. Their apology? £350 compensation

I stated I’m not happy with the amount, they referred me to the NAFD which advised that the funeral home and complaints are being incompetent as the NAFD can only deal with complaints a year old, no older. They stated that dignity are aware of this.

Now 5 years later I am sat still in debt over my fathers funeral with nothing to show for it.

Dear Cerys, Thank you for your review. I am so sorry to hear that we were not able to retrieve a recording of your late father’s funeral. I know that my colleague, Robyn, fully investigated your complaint and communicated with you, I can only apologise that we were not able to reach a satisfactory outcome. Kind regards, Brendan
