Jóhanna hated funerals. She also didn't care for sombre colours. Please wear at least a splash of bright colour.

After she qualified as a doctor in Iceland Jóhanna joined MSF (she took a year at the University of Grenoble to learn French) and worked in Uganda, Pakistan and Afghanistan mainly providing primary health care and in Sri Lanka where she ran the MSF mission. She realised that she needed more education in health management so went to the Harvard School of Public Health where she took a Master of Public Health and then a Master of Population Science and International Health. She then joined WHO as Yugoslavia fell apart. She was based in Split in Croatia and worked extensively throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina. She then ran the Former Yugoslavia Emergency Desk at WHO's European office in Copenhagen. In 1997 she moved to Delhi where she was responsible for Emergency Preparedness and Response in the WHO South East Asian Regional Office. In 2000 she moved to WHO HQ in Geneva to assist the Director of  Emergencies and Humanitarian Action. She took early retirement in 2005.

When I retired, we moved to Abingdon in Oxfordshire. Even though it started under lockdown, it was a change she thoroughly enjoyed.

So much for the dry bones of a career. I can’t possibly describe the wonderful character that propelled that career: the dogged hard work, the deep principled humanity, the warmth and kindness, the wit, the sense of fun and adventure. So I won’t. Anyone who ever met her will know all that. Because of her blond hair, the Afghans called her ‘Nuri’ – light. I just know that I’ve lost my brilliant best friend, my light.
