It is with great sadness that the family of John Wellard Mathews have to inform you that he passed away at his home in Sandridge, St. Albans on the 12th October 2021 at the age of 74. Dad had been playing online bridge in the evening just before he passed away and had got an excellent score. It has given us comfort to know he was playing a game he loved in the last moments of his life. He was a Geography teacher at St. Albans Girls School and took great pride in teaching there for many years. Growing up dad had many hobbies from Stamp collecting to Bus watching, but in later years his passions were Family Tree history, Bridge and enjoying his garden. Dad will be greatly missed by myself and my wife Cassie, his Brother Paul, Cousins Jan and Margert along with the rest of our wonderful family including his much loved cat Bella. He cherished his friendships with you all including his Bridge partnerships and we know he will be lovingly remembered by all those who knew him. Dads Funeral service and burial will take place on Thursday 11th November 2021. 11.30 at the Cemetery Chapel City of London Cemetery, Aldersbrook Road, London, E12 5DQ. Please dress smart, black or colour clothing is fine. Following this at 2.30pm we will be hosting his Wake/Celebration of Life at The Oak Suite, The Aubrey Park Hotel, Hemel Hempstead Rd, Redbourn, St Albans AL3 7AF. You are all welcome to join us for the funeral, burial and Wake however we do understand that travel to East London may be difficult for some. Feel free to attend whatever suits you best. Dad wanted donations made to Great Ormond Street Hospital instead of Flowers. He often told us that the Surgeons, Doctors and Nurses saved his life as a baby and greatly helped improve his quality of life as a child. Many thanks to all those who have helped us and sent messages, cards and flowers of support to us in this difficult time. Regards Tim (John’s son)
