It is with a profound sense of loss and a celebration of a full life, beautifully lived that we announce the passing of Ms. Harriet Barbara Warwick Crawford, known to most as Hatti, on the 15th of June 2024. Born on the 6th of May 1955, in Dodoma, Tanzania, Hatti's warmth and compassion touched all corners of her world, from her birthplace to her final home in Edinburgh, Scotland, where she passed away in peace in her home. Hatti's Christian faith was the cornerstone of her life and was the foundation for her being. She touched the lives of many with her kindness, compassion, selflessness and sense of fun, something we can all aspire to.
Hatti's early life in Tanzania instilled a spirit of adventure in her and a love for helping others, traits that would define her throughout her years. Her family returned to England after Tanzanian independence and settled in Snowshill in the Cotswolds. Her journey took her to Addenbrooke's Hospital, where she trained in midwifery and nursing, disciplines in which she would excel and through which she would leave an indelible mark on countless lives. For over 40 years, Hatti served faithfully in the NHS and for Marie Curie, dedicating her career to the wellbeing of others, and retired a cherished and highly regarded health visitor in Edinburgh.
Her care for the community extended beyond her professional life, as she offered her time and expertise as a trustee for Tumaini Scotland, a role in which she continued to advocate for the vulnerable and underserved. This in addition to her participation in a sewing group making reusable menstruation products for those in need, or the countless greetings card sales for various charitable causes - of course the cards were all homemade!
A woman of diverse interests, Hatti found joy in the simple pleasures of life. Her garden was a canvas of vibrant colours and a sanctuary for both her and the local wildlife - frogs and all! Long-distance walking and wild swimming were among her favourite activities, offering her peace and a deep connection with nature. She also delighted in coastal skiff rowing, an activity that reflected her love for the sea and the community of people that surround it. Her crowning achievement was winning gold at the women's 60+ crew at the coastal rowing World Championship in Stranraer in 2019; a testament to her competitive spirit and commitment to pushing herself.
In the tranquility of her home, Hatti was often found baking and cooking, her kitchen the heart of many gatherings where memories were made and laughter was shared. Her hands, ever active, turned to sewing and painting, creating beautiful works that were both an expression of her creative soul and a gift to those she loved.
Hatti is fondly remembered by her beloved son, Edward Crawford; her daughter-in-law, Sarah Hammerton; her brother, Adrian Muggleton, and sister-in-law, Monica Muggleton; Rob Crawford, former husband, along with a wider circle of family and a host of friends whose lives were enriched by her presence. She was generous, thoughtful, and loving—words that only begin to capture the essence of a woman whose legacy will continue to resonate in the hearts of those who knew her.
As we bid farewell to Hatti, we reflect on a life lived with purpose, kindness and endless generosity, a life that has left a lasting imprint on her community and everyone fortunate enough to have crossed her path. A life with strong faith and lived to truly reflect that which she strongly believed in. May the memories of her unwavering spirit and enduring love provide comfort to us all as we remember a remarkable woman who lived life to the fullest. Hatti's journey through this world was a testament to the beauty of a life well-lived, and she will be deeply missed.
