Hugh was born in Glasgow in 1943, son of Hugh and Margaret. A keen and talented footballer from an early age, Hugh signed professionally for Dundee United after leaving school. At his father’s insistence, he also took on a trade in parallel and qualified as an electrician. In the summer of 1963, Hugh left Scotland to sign for Barnsley, a move that proved to be more significant than he could ever have imagined. That same year he met Patsy, a local girl though she was living and working in London at the time. After a season with Barnsley, Hugh spent many happy years playing in the Southern League, most notably at Wimbledon, Ashford Town and Margate. He and Patsy married in 1967 and later settled back home to Barnsley in 1972, by which time they had a daughter and son. Hugh curtailed his professional career and commenced a long association with Wombwell F.C. He was player-manager for many years, ultimately retiring at the age of 40 in 1983. By this time, the family had grown with two further sons. His working career progressed and in the late 1970s he set up in partnership as an electrical contractor before acquiring W. Sagar in 1982, a local company established in Wombwell since the 1950s. In 1990 Hugh acquired Sheffield Electric Company, merging and growing the two businesses and serving customers across Yorkshire, including Barnsley and Sheffield hospitals, and further afield over several decades until his retirement in 2010. The ownership of the company was acquired by existing management and continues to thrive today. His wife Patsy enjoyed a long and distinguished teaching career, serving for many years as deputy head teacher at Park Street School, Wombwell. Hugh kept himself very fit and active, a single handicap golfer playing first at Barnsley Golf Club, followed by over 25 years at Tankersley, which included a spell as club captain, and most recently at Retford Golf Club. He developed and maintained a solid group of friends, with whom he embarked on many golf society trips both domestically and across Europe. Hugh ran the Sheffield marathon, and played 5-a-side football for many years, long enough to share a pitch with not only his three sons but also grandsons. Hugh and Patsy lived in Wombwell until 1999 before moving to Letwell, near Worksop and subsequently Retford in Nottinghamshire. They travelled extensively, particularly during retirement, visiting their family in California, Texas and New Zealand. In 2013, to celebrate his 70th birthday, Hugh accompanied his daughter, Helen, on an expedition to walk a stretch of the Great Wall of China. While these words give a brief insight into Hugh’s full and active life, they do not begin to portray the spirit in which it was lived. An infectious personality with a wicked sense of humour, he was a devoted family man who touched the lives of many. Hugh is survived by, and will continue to be the inspiration for, Patsy, their four children Helen, Jamie, Jonny and Andy, their nine grandchildren and his sister, Sandra. Unfortunately, numbers for remembrance services are limited. However, anyone who wants to participate in the service via Webex can contact E.Hurton and Sons Funeral Directors for details (contact details above).
