Maureen May (Filipkiewicz) died on Christmas Eve 2023 at the age of 96. A truly adventurous spirit who, hand in hand with her first husband and two toddlers, left the UK in 1955 bound for the USA. Ten years and two more children later they returned to Europe: first to France and then finally settling back in her beloved England. Her work included research at British Oxygen Company, Stanford Research Institute, teaching science in high school and her final job as a teacher of English as a foreign language to students from every corner of the globe. She was a passionate lover of the arts and a formidable traveller who visited the Middle East, North Africa and Europe. A trip with Maureen was never dull! She was generous, loving, erudite and created immediate connections with everyone she met. She gave her time enthusiastically as a volunteer at The Wimbledon Guild, Oxfam, Friends of Poland and Meals on Wheels. She will be missed by all, but especially her children Richard, Stefan, Antoni & Teresa Filipkiewicz, grandchildren Duncan Filipkiewicz and Gabriella Burns and great-grandchildren Raven and Ryon Filipkiewicz as well as her beloved extended family.
The cremation will be a private family affair. A memorial mass will be held at Sacred Heart Church, Edge Hill, London SW19 4LU at 11:30am, Monday January 29th, 2024 followed by a reception at the adjacent parish hall lounge to which all are invited.
In lieu of flowers the family feel that a donation to Oxfam or Medecins Sans Frontieres would have pleased Maureen enormously.
