How Do Funeral Plans Work?

This guide explains how prepaid Funeral Plans work and how they can protect loved ones when the time comes.

What is a prepaid funeral plan?

If you’re wondering, “what is a Funeral Plan, and can it work for me?” the below information will help you get a clearer understanding.

Funeral Plans are a great way to share final wishes and cover costs so that decision making and financial outlays don’t fall on loved ones at the time of need. When you purchase your unique Dignity plan, you lock in today’s price.

What are the benefits of funeral plans?

The real benefit of purchasing your unique Dignity Funeral Plan is that you lock in todays prices. This means that the services covered in your plan will be protected from possible future price increases.

From choosing your Funeral Director and dealing with paperwork, to organising the service and transport arrangements, everything in the Funeral Plan will have been taken care of when the time does eventually come.

What's included in a prepaid funeral plan?

At Dignity, we believe that your plan should be as unique as you are. We specialise in helping people record their unique wishes for their final send-off, however personal, creative or unusual they might be.

We believe that every life is unique and special and so every funeral should be too.

That’s why you won’t find any set package plans at Dignity.

We can capture your hopes and wishes for the day whilst providing some inspiration for you along the way. Whether you have planned a funeral before or this is the first time you’ve considered what that might look like, we can help inspire your celebration with stories of others and a guided journey to help capture the essence of the day you want.

Our online journey allows you to make a record of your preferences for the service itself, whether this includes any special readings, music or flowers you'd like. You can add in as much or as little detail as you wish.

All services provided by a Dignity Funeral Director are guaranteed, as well as the cremation fee and for burial, the interment fee. There are a number of elements you can include as part of your Funeral Plan that you may want to leave a monetary contribution towards. As an example you can contribute £100 towards the costs of flowers and when the plan is actioned the person arranging the funeral will have £100 plus any increase in line with CPI (Consumer Price Index) inflation towards the cost. We cannot guarantee that the contribution made will cover the full cost of the flowers and any difference will need to be paid at the time of the funeral. However, we will guarantee that the money you contribute now plus CPI will be available at the time of need.

How does a Dignity Funeral Plan work?

You can create a plan with Dignity via our online platform, in selected branches or over the phone with one of our experienced team members.

Design the Perfect Day

You can choose from a variety of options to create your perfect day but if there’s something you want that doesn’t come as standard, we give you the ability to leave instructions and monetary contributions for the things that will make your day unique.

Pay in a way that suits you

You can pay for your Dignity Funeral Plan upfront or you can spread the cost over 5 years (so long as this doesn’t take you past your 85th birthday). You won’t pay any additional administration fees for spreading the cost of your plan.

Set up your Plan

Soon, you'll be able to buy a plan for youself or on behalf of your partner or a family member.

The money you pay for a plan is placed in The UK Funerals (2022) Trust, which is an independent trust. The trustees ensure the money is prudently managed and we will also guarantee to add funds to the trust to ensure it is always fully funded.

Our commitment to delivering fair value to our customers means that the price of your Funeral Plan is no more than you'd be expected to pay for the same core elements of a funeral at today's prices.

Additionally, your money may also be protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme if we cannot meet our obligations.

We pride ourselves on providing financial peace of mind.

At Dignity, we choose to pay our customers' money into The UK Funerals (2022) Trust and no matter what happens; your money will be protected.

Personalise your Funeral Plan by recording your wishes

Perhaps you have a favourite passage from a book or a special poem that is important to you. Maybe you would like your ashes laid to rest at your favourite beauty spot, or an evergreen tree planted at your burial site. Whatever it is that makes your day yours you can record your wishes and be remembered in the way you want.

Activating a Funeral Plan

Where a Nominated Representative has been appointed they will be kept informed of your choices so they can ensure that all of your wishes are executed in the way you wanted.
